Second Hand

Lauren Laverne got me thinking yesterday when I read her weekly column in Grazia which I love.  Lauren has had a problem with the word Vintage since the good old days of nineties grunge when it was cool to buy second hand. At some point it got trendy to adopt the term vintage for what is essentially second hand clothes, perhaps in an attempt to persuade the masses to buy into it? It's true to say that during the late eighties and early nineties when my sister was shopping at second hand stores, second hand was pretty much what you called clothes bought in charity shops and second hand fairs. So as Lauren is ready to embrace the vintage message as she buys her ticket for Vintage, I find myself thinking there is a certain nostalgia and honesty about the word second hand and perhaps we should dispense with dressing up in vintage and get back to the second hand way of the world!

Talking of vintage if you still need a ticket for Wayne Hemingway's amazing Vintage festival at the Royal Festival Hall London from 29th-31st July then check out www.vintagebyhemingway.co.uk  it's a 3 day retro extravaganza that must not be missed! For those of you who were lucky enough to have been to Vintage at Goodwood last year then you know the format. It won't be quite like trudging through a field surrounded by amazing pop up shops, vintage stores and hair salons as the heavens opened with Black Elvis and Lindi hop rocking the torch club, but it will have it's own London charm and inspiration. I'm on the hunt for second hand styles so I can play dress up for a day at Vintage! I will be checking out  Marketplace at ASOS.com where there is a plethora of vintage boutiques under one roof! For vintage reproductions hot foot it to the V&A for some nostalgic inspiration in the style of Horrockses fashions from the 40's and 50's.
