Fashion Startups - Part One

Fashion startups are having a moment, the women at the forefront of the movement are everything our sister hood should aspire to.  Attention to detail and creativity in the design process is paramount. And with a work ethic not for the faint hearted, they cleverly marry their consultancy work, family and vast array of knowledge and networks to forge their path. They take risks few dare, and they have days where doubt sets in and the sometimes-lonely road of launching a business looks jagged and raw.  The possibility of failing is real but these women stare fear down and just get on with it. They know it’s better to try and fail than fail to try.

Bethnals is a London-based unisex denim brand unlike any other, offering the perfect fit in one unisex jean. With a wealth of industry experience under their belt, this exciting new brand isn't influenced by trends, but rather the culture of the city around them - think timeless, simple and modern pieces destined to see you beyond the season ahead, which struck a cord with my ethos of buying better not more of. Melissa Clement Bethnals founder is a denim geek, determined to blur the boundaries between Men and Women’s denim. I recently met Melissa to find out how her kickstarter campaign was going. Bethnals is crowd funding through Kickstarter to raise money for their first production run.  She admitted it had slowed down raising just over £6000 of her £10,000 target and was apprehensive about whether Bethnals would reach that target. With 20 days still to run she said “you really have to want to get up every day and put your whole self into it to make it happen, it’s a not easy, and sometimes I think I could have a very comfortable life with lots of spare time and money on my hands, but I have to do this, it’s my dream”. Melissa is investing every spare moment of her time and money to see Bethnals succeed, and remains quietly optimistic she will hit her target. As I write  Bethnals closed their campaign yesterday at £12,207! A great achievement. If you would like to be part of the Bethnals experience follow them on twitter at Bethnals@Bethnals or there website for launch dates and stockists, www.bethnals.com.

SIDELINE is a contemporary womens-wear label with understated design and subtle detailing. Each season SIDELINE aims to deliver a concise but versatile collection of woven pieces based in indigo that uses a carefully edited range of fabrics. Clever cutting combined with innovative wash techniques give the line its unique aesthetic. SIDELINE is about building a lifestyle and a community around the collection. SIDELINE LIFE, is their lifestyle blog showcasing a beautiful collection of creatives family homes and studio's, shot on location by Ellen Brookes, SIDELINE founder. What strikes me about SIDELINE clothing is the promise of concise yet versatile pieces, which hint that every item has been created with a timeless purpose. In a world of excessive trend forced upon consumers at every turn it will be refreshing to see a range crafted with lifestyle and community at it's heart. SIDELINE is soon to 'soft launch' with their first look book photo shoot taking place today. Follow SIDELINE on twitter at EllenBrookes@SIDELINE_WW or check out the website for SIDELINE LIFE at www.sideline-clothing.com for news of the launch.

I am certainly excited to see these two wonderful starups go from strength to strength, there is honest integrity in what they are trying to achieve. I feel honored to be in such inspiring company and with the launch of my label Deborah Campbell Atelier imminent I look forward to sharing the journey with them.
